M3 V8 vs RS4 V8 engine:

To save you the time to look up that engine's numbers, we'll make those inevitable comparisons for you:

1. Last year we marveled that Audi squeezed 420 horsepower out of only 4.2 liters. BMW has now squeezed the same amount out of only 4.0.

2. Last year we couldn't believe the Audi V-8 revved to 8250 rpm. BMW's dyno chart doesn't stop until 8400.

3. Last year we thought it was amazing that the RS4's power peak was at a lofty 7800 rpm. That seems like peanuts, now - the M3's engine makes peak power at 8300.

4. Last year we all oohed and aahed that the RS4's V-8 makes 90 percent of its peak torque over a 5350-rpm range. (From 2250 to 7600 rpm). Now, BMW's V-8 adds 400 rpm to that already unbelievable spread - it does the same from 2500 to 8250 rpm.

RS4 got 430 Nm and M3 got 400. Would not say that there is that much diference.

Pretty much alike.

+ We have yet to se what the CSL will get.

These comparisons remind me of the good ol days when the E46 m3 was compared to the C32 AMG. it was such a close race but daang, The rs4 vs M3 is just toooo close!

BTW, does anyone else thing BMW may have messed up by making the 335? Theres hardly much in it. Buy a 335 and do an ECU upgrade and im sure it will be just as fast if not faster then the new ///M. Anywayz, thats just a hunch but with time all shall be revealed

And Audi S4 B6 vs BMW M3 E46 was also a close call. Horsepower, price, size... but in the end the M3 was forced to be compared to RS4 instead. Now BMW has built a M3 that on paper is on par with the RS4 (although i think the M3 will not get proper R-tires, composite breaks ect. so RS4 will still have an advantage there).

The race is on!

Rs4 is also a 4.2 liter and not 4.0 liter so of course more torque for RS4

the whole talk which engine is the best is just pointless. What meassure a good engine? it sure isnt only HP and NM, its the whole package which make it hard to determine which one is the best. You need to be a good engine engineer to figure it out.

But only 9,3 % on a more narrow band. On the other hand the RS4 engine is only 5 % larger.

honestly, the whole talk which engine is the best is just pointless. What meassure a good engine? it sure isnt only HP and NM, its the whole package which make it hard to determine which one is the best. You need to be a good engine engineer to figure it out and not a guy reading the pressrelese.

Its going to be intresting if this engine get as many awards as the M3 E46 engine, probably not.

335i will not be a problem for M3,belive me.With ECU modifications you may get the desired HP and top speed, but it will still be a regular 3 series in comparison to M3.See what do I mean?M car is something special, unique and far more sophisticated than any regular 3 series, even with mods installed.BTW,moding is for japan cars, not for BMW(especially M cars).Honestly.

judging from the engine spec, m3 will be a better track car while rs4 a better everyday car. i for one don't always rev my car up to high heaven when i drive, so it really depends on what ppl prefer.
but then we still need to take price into consideration, i reckon m3 will still be cheaper?
