I noticed the same thing, along with different kidney grills. So this is what I'm thinking; M models are going to become more differentiated from standard models. Look at the M6, the molding around the front lights is completely different, so perhaps this is just the next step in a new M philosophy of design. I guess the wolf in sheep's clothing theme is no more, which I'm not sure is a good thing. I kind of liked how older M cars weren't so easily recognizable. However, if you look at the e46 M3, it screams performance, as does the M5 and M6. After spending a long period of time with the new M5, I kind of like it's almost over the top look. It makes the car look and feel (the interior is a work of art) as special as it drives. I just don't want M cars to start having huge amounts of extra/tacky visual aids, like the useless M gills on the new M5.
