Ecclestone’s Mercedes 540K sells for almost £4 million
Famed Formula One Chief and billionaire Bernie Ecclestone auctioned off his Mercedes-Benz 540K Special Roadster in London yesterday for a whopping £3.9million ($8.1million). It was one of over 40 cars that went up for sale, contributing to a combined value of £15million.
After a lengthy 15 minutes of bidding, the car was sold to an unnamed buyer seated at the front of the room. With a top estimate of £4million pounds, the bid fell just short, but remains one of the highest successful bids ever made for a car on auction.
The Mercedes-Benz 540K was a limited-edition supercharged roadster produced in 1936, just before World War II. In its day the 540K was valued at ten times the price of an average Ford. Only 26 examples were ever built, according to RM Auctions, leading to its incredibly high resale value today.
