It's not that simple. For instance there are lot of very powerful people in America who think that US shouldn't be dependent on foreign energy resources. This particularly applies to oil since most of it is located in states that don't have good US-relations and in regions where there is a high risk of conflicts. Furthermore the price can be manipulated by a cartel that changes the output accordingly.
