He did the right thing by driving off the road. I know a guy collided with a moose. The moose was hit on the side and rolled straight over the hood, straight into the windshield and ripping off the roof(!). Luckily he survived but with some damage to his head and chest since the moose came straight at him.

If you see a moose on the road the best thing to do is to drive straight at the rear legs.
