The unification of Germany did force the reevaluation of the German Mark if I recall correctly. I'm sure the collapse of communism in Eastern Europe had worldwide monetary effects and hence the price differences.
I don't know too much about that period as I was only 8 years old and never bothered to read up on the subject. All I can tell you is that Germany won the 1990 World Cup in Italy.
