Well maybe Mercedes should never have gotten rid of the W126, which was launched the same year as the G class.

Mercedes needs to replace the G class because it no longer fulfills it's originally intended purpose - it's raison d'être is now as a status-symbol for the supermarket carparks of up-market suburbs - and that is a very sad and superficial end for what was once the world's best off-road vehicle.
