The second letters in this case, BM, can be chosen by the owner of the car. For example, the license plate of my dad's 500SL is EC 888. You guys won't want to know how much we pay for premium plates. Number plates with single digits (especially with the number 1) can go for US60k or more. Yes it isn't a typo.

That's why people can do business selling plates... And no, we can't choose our alphabets nor numbers.
As for us, well Chris is right, 8 is a lucky number. My dad has 9918 and 718 for his cars.

We got them cheap though, just about US450...
Our Mayor (Prime Minister, we call him that here) drives a conspicuous S350... Though I'm not quite sure if he has others for non-official events.
