Mercedes has always marketed the CLK as a much more expensive/higher end 2 door coupe than the C-class sedan/wagon. As such, the CLK does not compete with the 3 series coupe from a pricing point of view. In fact, the CLK has been positioned between the C-class and E-class (actually closer to the E-class).
As such, I think Mercedes wanted to have a "sporty" 2 door hatchback to compete in the lower price range of the 3 series....hence the C-coupe.
Having said all this, history has shown us that not many people will buy a C-coupe.
