If your spending 3$ per gallon of gas (average CA cost), you can take 15,000 and devide it by its mpg. Then multiply that number by 3$.

So 335d: Yearly cost is roughly 1184$
335i: yearly cost is 1500$

which brings us to a total gas savins of 316$ per year if you own a 535d. Now, we know that the cost of a 335d is £2055 more than a 335i, which is roughly $2656 USD, and so we devide that number by $316-and we come with a total of 8.4 years to justify the cost of the 335d with gas savings-never mind interest rates that are higher in the diesel version as well.

Depends on price of diesel vs. petrol fuel witch varies from country to country due to taxation policies. Also some countries actually offer incetives, tax reduction for diesel cars/owners.
Also, if petrol is 3 $ in USA, it costs between 4 $ to 9 $ across Europe. If it's a better choice people will go diesel.
