I understand what you're saing.

But consider this:

Starting with the 1990s BMW began pursuing a new design philosophy, witch becamed visible with the 2001 E65 7 series (and pre 2001 concepts too).

Why cars such as the e39 5er and e38 7er paid the price, was because they were underperformers.

The E39 5er could only battle head to head with the E klasse in the USA.
In Europe and other countries the e39 could not reach the sales of the E klasse nor stop/slow the boom of the Audi A6 (Avant).

So something had to be done, because without the USA sales, the e39 5er would be considered a (sales) flop for BMW.

While not everybody likes/loves/isn't bothered by its design, the E60 is without a doubt the most succesfull 5er ever (so far).

So I guess you can't please everyone.
