Can the BMW 118i reach 235 km/h?

More seriously, I think most speedos are inherently less specific at higher speed, and BTW... if you're already WAY TOO FAST, why bothering to care? Just try to get even faster while you're at it.

So a speedo is useless at >160 km/h in a non-racing car, that's why I never look at it at those high speeds...

Speedos are allowed to over-read by 10% but are not allowed to under-read AT ALL.

My father once told me he managed 270 km/h in his 1989 Mercedes-Benz 500SL - which was known to have no limiter (previous owner had it removed).

Does this mean he was in reality doing only 250 km/h but the speedometer said 270 km/h?

I myself had the car up to 250 km/h and there was still room for more speed, both on the tachometer and engine RPM counter. And let me tell you, 250 km/h felt like 250 km/h or at least close to it.

Probably.

My M3 goes up to an indicated 271km/h before it hits the wall pretty abruptly.
