would it be a wash if you're spooling up a smaller turbo but with less exhaust, unless you're also giving consideration to other means of turbo actuation i.e. electronic?

I'm not even gonna lie. I'm not even gonna pretend to be able to have a discussion on this, at least not as technical as Martin. But to answer your question. A smaller turbo would play the part, so would the location of the exhaust valve relative to the turbo, etc. The electronics will, of course, play a huge part for on the fly adjustments to various situations and pedal positioning, etc.

Of course, all of this is IMO. I'm no engineer, but just your average enthusiast.

Talking about lag, here is an interesting article about how S63 addresses it.

To me, it would be very logic if an engine of a size that in itself would relatively easily manage the targeted power output, produced the least lag as the turbo would not need to build that much pressure. Low pressure is easier to build than high pressure, all other thing equal.

Again, I'm a lawyer... not an engineer.

Thanks Sunny, that's a very nice write-up there. Of course the concept is fundamentally reliant on the use of twin-scroll turbocharging which has been around for some time now. It's clever, no doubt, but hardly earth-shaking in terms of innovation.

Quote:
As you can see, just like a regular twin-turbo V-8, there is an exhaust pulse going to one of the turbos every 90 degrees of crankshaft rotation. However with this manifold, each turbo gets a pulse every 180 degrees rather than at the uneven intervals.

If you look closely at which scroll receives the exhaust pulse when, you'll see that each turbo is fed by the same scroll twice in a row. That design likely maximizes any positive interference effect between the pulses.

And there you have it; a stroke of genius that helps the first turbo M engine retain M's trademark responsiveness. Not compared to its normally aspirated engines, of course, but compared to all other turbo engines. For those who love the power of turbos but loathe the lag (and that would be me) this small change makes the future seem a whole lot brighter. Because like it or not, we're going to see a lot more turbos in the future.
Some important points in the above paragraphs.

Of course, the greater the engine displacement and the number of cylinders, the better the volumetric flow regardless and hence the more responsive the engine vs. a smaller, four cylinder one by comparison.

Ok, fair enough then, the S63 is an N63 with different turbos and exhaust manifold.

...and new pistons, new cylinder heads, new intake manifold, altered cam timings, new throttle bodies and a finned aluminum oil pan.

Come on, someone give the damn engine it's due...lol. But I blame BMW too for using a 2.5 ton truck to introduce turbos, instead of a lighter sports car.

But in a sense, it is the perfect application for a diesel character engine.

BMW could probably build something engaging of it, high revving and eager... just look at what McLaren did.

2012 BMW 1-Series

Motorauthority
Quote:
BMW released an updated version of the 1-Series compact late last year but since then suspicious prototypes of a new car with similar proportions and signature BMW styling have been captured running around the south of Germany. Previously, we had only seen early development test-mules but the latest shots reveal full prototypes for the next-generation 1-Series Hatchback model.

The current 1-Series has often been criticized for having a back seat no full-sized adult would be comfortable in. However, the rear seat room in this new 2012 model is expected to be much improved. This may also see BMW finally release the Hatchback version of the 1-Series in the all-important U.S. market. A slightly longer wheelbase and wider track than the current model will be present.

Last year BMW CEO Norbert Reithofer revealed that the four-cylinder engines destined for the next-gen 1-Series will be the same compact units developed jointly by BMW and France’s PSA Peugeot-Citroen for the Mini and a number of French models. The engines will range from 1.4 to 2.0-liters in displacement and will be available in both turbocharged and naturally aspirated forms. Expect to see BMW’s award-winning straight six engines also appear in the lineup. Engines could be downsized somewhat to meet more stringent emissions and fuel economy rules, but with the aid of the direct injection and forced induction, power figures may not decrease substantially, and could even increase in models like the 135i.

Engine stop-start and electrical-regenerative systems should carry over into the new series as well as possible new EfficientDynamics technologies such as heat-recovery systems and solar panels. BMW has also revealed that initial testing of thermoelectric generators and solar panels on its cars showed savings of up to 5% in fuel consumption.

Expect the new 1-Series Hatchback to launch in 2011 and be followed by new Coupe and Convertible variants, as well as a possible shooting brake model and high-performance M version.
