They will probably use half of one of those V6 engines that will soil the next generation cars.

I thoght this one was going to be less evolutionary and more agressive than the current one. The frontlights seem to be quite near the 5er GT ones.

Not a revolution, indeed. But maybe in a crisis it isn't the time for too much courage in cardesign. The current 1 series did work for BMW, so there is no need to change the design completely.

It's an entry level car and that's want BMW wants it to remain. If the design is too attractive, the car will steal sales from the 3-Series. The generation does it's job like they want it to, design is kept very laid back and functional leaving the 3-Series to shine as a "proper" BMW that carries a higher returns for BMW.

so you say that they make the 1series ugly to sell more 3series' ?
logic, eh ?
both cars are build on the same platform and at the same plant, it hardly makes a difference
i wouldn't judge the design just yet, way too early
but huckfelts CGIs seem to be true

The best way to describe some of the styling "revolution" on the "evolution" is to look at aspects of the X1. The strong sculptured line that begins from the rear quarterlight and scoops down towards the flanks and then joining the shoulderline before the front wheelarch is the 1er family design characteristic for the next generation if you look at the shape on the X1 on the lower flanks you can see it is an interpretation of the feature on the current 1er. The bathtub shoulderline will stay with more of an angle coming down towards the front of the car.

The Coupe and Cabrio will receive different front and rear ends from the hatch. BMW will have the 1er product line split in two with the 1er Hatchback , 3dr Sports hatch , X1 and the 1er Gran Turismo. With the 1er Coupe , Cabrio and Z2 Roadster and Coupe, Equally ambitious but not given the go-ahead is a smaller Xcoupe which would see the idea of the original Xcoupe Concept resurrected as a smaller allwheel drive lifestyle coupe.
The 1er product line will overtake the largest range of bodystyles in the BMW portfolio and is aimed at the size of the market who will be looking to downsize without the sacrifice of performance , luxury and individual needs.

Is the 1er GT already confirmed?
Will it be on the market before the "normal" 5dr and 3dr? Or was the 5 GT an exception and other GT-variants will debut later than their sedanish base-car?

Customers like cheap cars but car manufacturers wants customer to buy expensive cars. The 1-series is not made ugly to sell more 3-series, it's just designed not to upstage the 3-series similar to how the Audi A3 doesn't carry an exciting design either. If someone is in the market for a splendid design then they will have to trade up. The current design is not bad but could look a bit livelier. I wouldn't be surprised if the X1 is an indication of what to expect. Share exterior components would be great for keeping costs down.
