US 1-Series Production Cut!

According to several sources at the US 1 Series launch event a few weeks ago, BMW has decided to cut US bound 1 Series production from 30,000 to around 10,000 for time being. Apparently the weakening dollar is making 1er margins razor thin and BMW doesn’t want to commit more money to marketing which would help sell the more cars.

Our original information was recently confirmed through other sources and contacts. The allocation dealers have been quoted are much lower than originally estimated. From what we have learned they are only being alloted 4-6 cars per month currently for the entire model line. If you do the math that is around 15,000 cars and that does not mean every dealer will be given that many cars. Some of the first cars at dealers on the East Coast will be 128 convertibles which are currently sitting awaiting clearance from the EPA and are more than likely dealer showroom/demo cars. Many of the first batch of coupes that were destined for this role were damaged last month in a shipping accident.

So if you want that 135i for 2008 you may want to make the call asap and of course pay at least MSRP. At the release time of this article we have access to several pre-specced cars if anyone is interested.

Re: US 1-series production cut!

BS!

When 1-series coupe was announced last year BMW officials said they had plans to sell 20.000 units of 1er coupe worldwide annually.

Where the hell did those guys get 30k number for US market alone????

Yet 30k number is more appropriate sales goal for complete 1-series incl cabrio - since cabrio is expected to sell better than the coupe.

But since Dollar : Euro rate is exceeding 1 : 1.5 all European car makers are taking measures to keep US market profits in black numbers.

Re: US 1-series production cut!

Hmmm... not sure what to make of this. Cutting production by 2/3's is a big deal IMO. If this car is a runaway hit I can't see them sticking to that 10K figure.

Not sure, doesn't sound right. Looks like to me someone is trying to plug their dealership and put it out there that you'd better get one now while you can. Typical salesperson move.

Exactly.
My suspicion as well.

Re: US 1-series production cut!

However you look at it, they may not be selling well. If the story is true it's not a great thing; on the other hand, if it's a ploy
by a dealer to drive up sales by resorting to such a drastic measure, that also indicates trouble.
Personally, i thing they are too expensive.

Re: US 1-Series Production Cut!

I say it's BS because the 1-series they're specifying is specifically oriented for the US market. The regular 1 hatch has been in Europe for a few years. Why would they cut production on a model that is specifically targeted for the US market. Doesn't sound right to me...

Re: US 1-Series Production Cut!

Interesting .. I can see why they would do that cos of the US dollar.. the 1er in america is so freakin cheap compared to almost every other country, the fact that the low US dollar is getting them even LESS profit off it would give cause for concern.
The low US dollar affects any of us who make money in from the US or in US dollars..

Re: US 1-Series Production Cut!

Hmmm, if the profit margin is small, doesn't it make sense to sell more and increase the net profit and also split the marketing costs among more cars? What bs!
