The VAG 1.8T is surely not a bad engine but a very un-BMW one. I think BMW have been experimenting with turbocharged engines for quite a while before they got is the way they wanted.

This is a generalisation and not a clear cut fact.

Purely because of the newer injection and catalytic convertor technology are modern turbo'd engines capable of yielding lower CO2 emissions than in older technology petrol engines.

A case in point being the 330i vs the 335i. The latter has a higher CO2 emission as a result of the greater volumetric throughput of the engine vs. the naturally aspirated version of pretty much the same engine in terms of capacity.

But now watch the high power M engines in CO2. The 335i engine is almost as fast as and z4 m engine which has been updated to EU4 now compare those in CO2.

^ I understand where you're coming from AdvEvo but what I'm attempting to explain is that, in engines of the same layout, displacement and technology:

a. The turbo engine will have more power and torque as a result of more air (and the fuel needed to burn it) being pumped into the engine.
b. This comes at a cost to fuel efficiency.
c. ...and consequently the more fuel you burn - the higher your emissions.

Now, technologically speaking, we are in a new era of direct injection "lean burn" engines which, through the use of clever injectors that create an ultra fine atomisation of fuel droplets that dramatically increase the surface area of the combustible mist, are able to achieve the same bang for less fuel. The more efficient your fuel burn - the lower your emissions. Compare this with earlier, less precise indirect injection and even more archaic carburettion (which essentially just pissed fuel via jets into downdraught chokes) and you can easily see where the majority of emissions reduction progress has been made in combustion technology. [Exhaust gas catalysation is an altogether different arena]

Comparing a mass-market engine to an M-engine for emissions purposes is potentially misleading. Let's look at that S65 engine in the M3 for example; its purpose is to process as much fuel and air as the market will bear regarding the resultant fuel economy. Its eight throttle bodies and inlet trumpets allow for the maximisation of airflow into the combustion chamber; the S65 gulps whole bathfuls of air every second. More air, more fuel - bigger bang but so too: worse fuel economy and emissions than an ordinary NA 4 litre V8.
