Well, one of 40 underlines the limited-edition character. You have that in many sportscars with limited editions. Like it a lot.

Edition 10 is a special edition too, no problem. Or Final Edition, or all that. Not a fan of these special editions, but it is ok.

"Year one of the one", it is different. I find it ridiculous, pretentious, childish, don't see the point. If they had, for instance put a special "one of 100" for the 100 first 1-Series in the US, it would have been a great idea, but here it is ridiculous, pretentious, I don't like it at all.

A limited edition for the first 1-Series, why not. But here, find the text and the idea ridiculous.

Here's something for you, raoul:

The engraved Start/Stop button is one of several notable initiatives to be announced celebrating the launch of the new BMW 1 Series in America next spring. Appearing exclusively in the 2008 calendar year 1 Series models coming to the U.S., the “Year One of the 1” button was created by the same team of BMW designers who designed the 1 Series.

“Forty years ago, BMW introduced a car, the legendary 2002, that changed the American automotive landscape. That car was a pivotal car in the history of BMW and is still revered by aficionados today. We believe the 1 Series will be as important to the history of BMW in America,” said Jack Pitney, Vice President, Marketing, BMW of North America. “The ‘Year One of the 1’ Start/Stop button is a way to directly engage our customers with a simple message of celebration each time they get behind the wheel of their new 1 Series,” continued Pitney. “Our ‘Year One of the 1’ activities will incorporate several elements that will celebrate this historic launch. The specially engraved Start/Stop button is just one of the many things we will announce as we approach the launch next year.”

The new 1 Series, which draws inspiration from the legendary BMW 2002 of 1968 with a focus on pure performance, will be available as a Coupe and Convertible. In addition to premium design, the 1 Series features rear-wheel-drive dynamics, agile handling, powerful 6 cylinder engines and seating for four.

I agree, this does seem like a cheesy marketing gimmick. I think BMW is getting way ahead of themselves here.

"the next BMW icon every time they start or stop their cars....Forty years ago, BMW introduced a car, the legendary 2002, that changed the American automotive landscape. That car was a pivotal car in the history of BMW and is still revered by aficionados today. We believe the 1 Series will be as important to the history of BMW in America."

I doubt it will have the impact they are predicting. They can't really put themselves on this map twice. The market today is much different compared to 40 years ago (particularly in the US); almost every niche has been filled/saturated (or will soon be), and while the 1-Series is no doubt a good drive, in its current form it doesn't stand out enough to make the kind of impact the 2002 did. The 2002 was also much lighter than its stablemate, the 3.0CS, and quite a bit cheaper. It felt rawer (manual-wind windows/sunroof, no wood inlays, cloth/vinyl upholstery, very rudimenary ventilation system, unassisted steering), more fleet on its feet. By comparison, the 1-Series coupe is much more closely aligned to the 3 Series.

What should I get, Tycoon? BMW did it, so it is brilliant? Naah, it is ridiculous. And the 1 Coupe, a revolution? Make it more than 50kgs lighter than a 3-Series, then, and after that you can begin to talk...

The 1-Series is surely an excellent car, I don't like it but it only is my opinion. But a revolution, that will change the America's automotive landscape? Let me laugh. You only will see it in 20 years; and I don't get the revolution in the 1-Series.

There are lots of good cars, but very few will become legends.

It is what I say: pretentious. And therefore, ridiculous.

There is a difference between "special edition" or "limited" cars and ALL cars. Those are special cars. 1 or 40 actually makes sense, because that is a limited number, but the fact that ALL 1 series will have this engraving is pretty pointless.

I'm not getting mad. It was BMers comment where for some reason he thought "limited" cars are the same as ALL the freakin cars a company makes. 1 out of 40 is WAY different to "we're gonna sell 20k cars a year, and all of them will have this engraving".

You're missing my point, Naruto! I'm not equalising MB's special editions and 1 Series Coupe. I'm only talking about the engravings. They never said it's going to say something like "1 out of 20.000". It's a nice small detail and I'm very surprised to see all the bashing.
If you read the article it says that this is only one small detail that is going to celebrate the launch of the 1 series in America. I think it's worth something special when the car in question is the modern reincarnation of the 2002. It's also smaller car than what Americans are used to and unique as the main competitors have nothing comparable. There's a few reasons that IMO justify the underlining of the launch in US.

I have nothing against BMW making something to celebrate the launch of the 1-Series in the US.

However, the text "Year one of the 1-Series" is very pretentious (hey is it Jesus-Christ made car or what?), ridiculous and not accurate at all.

I don't like it at all.

A special launch edition, a special 2002 edition with special colours or equipments or I don't know what, yes. This pretentious mention, no.
