and I strongly disagree on your comments on the gearbox, bmw has one of the best manual gearboxes. 1-series also has sportier feeling than on 3-series, shorter shiftings it feels like. I drove the new Golf GTI a couple of days go and I find the gearbox in the babybimmer to be more precise and with better feeling.
I think you are to obsessed with automatics thats why you dare to complain on bmw's finest, the manual gearbox

Your sister has a good taste in car for what I see. The 1-Series really is the most unique of all hatchbacks. Personally, I think your sister would be better off with either the 120i or 120d. I found the 118i to be a bit slow...

but did you drive the facelifted 118i with 143hp?

I have driven 118i with 129hp and 120i with 150 hp, acceleration between them isnt much different, not anything you feel much. Save cash and buy a 118i instead of a 120i with 150hp, thats my opinion.

btw christian, wasnt she suppose to order 118d ?

I drove the pre-facelift 118i.

and Caw is buying a facelifted 118i with 143hp its a new developed engine.

Pretty sure he said she wasn't going to get a diesel, because of a tax you have to pay on diesels, which means you have to drive a certain amount of miles a year to make up the extra cost in tax, but she won't be driving the car that much!

No offense, I know BMW has some great manual transmissions but the transmission in this 118i felt average. It was better than any Mercedes-Benz manual by far, but it felt on par with my ex-1992 Mitsubishi Galant GTI 5-speed manual for example. It just didn't feel special. Either this car was an exception or I don't know a good manual when I drive one.
